Mission and Vision

Mission

The mission of the Scurry County Museum is to be an educational research resource for our community and all who visit through engagement with the diverse history and culture of Scurry County.

Vision

We aspire to stimulate creative thought through an environment that inspires our community and cultivates a passion for history and culture by providing thought-provoking and interactive research opportunities, collections, events, exhibits, and educational programming that is accessible to everyone.

Our History

The Scurry County Museum was envisioned as a repository for artifacts and information relating to the history of the county and surrounding area and as an aid to interpreting that history to younger generations. A group of dedicated individuals in the community organized the Scurry County Museum Association in 1970 to make plans for the building and to oversee its operation. The museum building, constructed with funds from a bond issue approved by county residents, was opened in 1974.

The museum’s permanent exhibit has seen renovations over the years but is proud to still display milestone artifacts from our history. Including the rifle J. Wright Moore used to shoot the White Buffalo, a chuckwagon brought by a rancher in 1878, and the millionth barrel of oil.

As the Museum’s 50th anniversary approaches we are working towards creating an online database to share the history and knowledge the museum houses with the public. We look forward to what the future brings as we Scurry Into History.
